White
spokked pickerel
Esox lucius
White spokked pickerel is the only
one representative of the pike fish - Esocidae in our waters which has
one genus and five species.
It belongs to typical carnivorous
species, grows fast with sufficient food and in its 1st year of age
achieves a weight of 0.6 kg and
sometimes even more.
In its initial stages it feeds
on fine plankton, benthos, small fry and larvae of chironomids. When it
grows to a length of 21 mm it becomes a cannibal, and later it is an exclusive
predator.
In its third year it reaches a
length of 40-50 cm and weight of 1 to 3 kg.
It grows to a maximum weight of
5-12 kg and length of 100 cm.
It highly appreciated at the domestic
and foreign markets for its excellent cuisine qualities and for preparation
of specialities.
We catch pike from 1 July to 31
December. It is successfully caught using live small fish or drawn bait
- dead fish or various types of spinners.
It is a precious farming fish and
much-sought-for object of the fishing sport. |
